Storytellers Museum adds
"Minnie Pearl" to Collection The Storytellers Museum in Bon Aqua, TN, purchased two bronze model statues from Grinders Switch Foundation (GSF). The purchase supported GSF's project to raise funds for a life-size bronze statue that will be placed on the Centerville Square. The artist, Jennifer Grisham, is a renowned sculptor from Columbia, TN. She authorized the sale of the limited edition model statues to help raise the remaining funds. The statues purchased by the Storytellers Museum were the first two from the series of twelve. On October 31, 2017, GSF Board Members presented the bronze model statues with the Certificates of Authenticity to Storytellers Museum. Legends: A Tribute to Hank & Elvis
Jason Petty Band Music magically transports us to the times when life was more romantic…and those times were the golden years of music by Hank Williams, as well as Elvis Presley. In “Legends: Hank and Elvis”, Petty follows the significant similarities between the two icons. Here is how Jason describes them: “I have a deep interest in these two very gifted men. Both were Southerners born into poverty and were essentially loners. They had very strong mothers who helped guide their early lives and to whom both were devoted. These mothers also were firmly rooted in religion and raised their boys around gospel music. They learned their musical craft at the feet of poor, black blues musicians and singers. Hank and Elvis rocketed to stardom, thus affecting their entire lives. Both changed music forever.” Jason Petty, the writer, director and performer of this and several other national renowned musical shows, has roots deep in Hickman County. He spent his summers with his grandmother and father in Primm Springs, TN and says he learned his love of music singing Gospel with his grandma. His admiration of Hank Williams and Elvis Presley came by listening to the radio with his dad. Jason still has family members in our area. Greatly inspired, he has dedicated his professional life to paying tribute to these historic artists. More than a musical review, this is storytelling at its best. |
Musical Trails Web Site
The Hickman County Library is proud to announce the launching of the Musical Trails web site, which recounts the role music has had in Hickman County. This site is an audio, video and photographic experience. It forms a collection of memories from folks who made music their lives. Resembling the scrapbook of an old time musician, the site takes you through the beginnings of Hickman County music and the paths it has taken over time. Stories are told of Paul Warren, Howdy Forrester, Ernest Ferguson, Charlie Garner, Emory Martin and many others who followed their path to the Grand Ole Opry. Minnie Pearl's story is of laughter, as well as music. Beth Slater Whitson changed the nature of music with her lyrics at the turn of the century. Hers is an outstanding tale of perseverance. The site was made possible through funding from the TN Arts Commission contributing grants, which sustained the artists' fees over the five years of the project. Additional contributing organizations include Buffalo-Duck River RC&D, the TN Department of Tourism, and Grinders Switch Foundation. |
