Beth Slater Whitson
Lyricist

In Memoriam 1879-1930

Born in Goodrich, the daughter of John Humble and Anna Slater Whitson, Beth composed lyrics to over 400 songs while writing poems and short stories, many of which were published in leading magazines of the early 20th Century. Her first major hit was "Meet Me Tonight in Dreamland" in 1909, followed in 1910 by her most celebrated song "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" which was inducted into the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress in 2015.

Moving to Nashville in 1913, Beth and her sister Alice Whitson Norton continued to write and publish at her home, Lookaway. Considered Nashville's first songwriter, she is buried there in Spring Hill Cemetery.
